A child can learn to sing as soon as the child can match pitch, which can be as young as 4 years. The vocal mechanism responds to training at whatever age the student begins to study. The benefit of starting young reflects in the child developing proper use of the speaking voice as well. A good speaking voice reflects confidence and poise.
Because instruction is curriculum based, having prior experience isn’t a requirement for studying. Instruction begins with building a foundation tailored to a student’s aptitude and is applied to learning repertoire in the style of his or her choosing.
The physical benefits in singing are well documented. Singing massages the internal organs. It builds core muscle strength, breath control, and proper body alignment. Studies show that singing builds a stronger immune system. Like any physical endeavor, the more you do it and with regularity, the more beneficial the results.
Singing is a visceral experience. We don’t necessarily think about how the body and mind coordinate to speak – but cue the music: pitch, melody, words - “singing” - and whoa! The human voice is suddenly taken to the sub-atomic level of sound and sensation. The TV show, “The Voice” tries to sensationalize this using lights, electronics, and theatrics. But this hardly tells the story. Singing is a passion. This is why people who never pursued singing start taking lessons even late in life. This is why parents bring their children into the studio saying their kid sings all the time. It is the piercing sound of a baby’s cry, the scream of surprise, the hilarious laugh at something funny, the shout for joy. It’s the sound of your voice resonating with the song of the universe.
Instruction is offered in-studio or remotely via Skype.
